RxOH 2023 Alum: Eric Sibomana

Greetings to all,

I write this blog with a heart brimming with gratitude and excitement, as I reflect on the incredible experience I gained from the One Health Course at the prestigious University of California, Davis, organized by the Rx One Health, School of Veterinary Medicine. This transformative journey has left an indelible mark on my professional and personal growth, and I am eager to share my journey with you all.

From the moment I stepped onto the beautiful campus of UC Davis, I knew that this course would be a life-changing experience. The multidisciplinary knowledge imparted during the program was unparalleled. We delved deep into the intricacies of human, animal, and environmental health, learning from some of the brightest minds and experts from across the globe. The holistic perspective of the One Health approach expanded my understanding of health-related issues, emphasizing the critical interconnections between different disciplines.

But the real magic lay in the diverse group of participants who shared this journey with me. Colleagues from various countries brought unique experiences and perspectives to the table, enriching our discussions and problem-solving approaches. Collaborating with professionals from diverse backgrounds was an invaluable experience that broadened my horizons and deepened my appreciation for the power of teamwork and cooperation.

As a Rwandan, the opportunity to participate in this course held particular significance. It allowed me to not only contribute my perspectives but also learn from the experiences of others, gaining insights into the One Health challenges faced by different regions. This has fueled my desire to become a positive change inducer in my community, using the acquired knowledge and skills to tackle the health issues that affect us all. The interdisciplinary knowledge gained from the One Health program will play a pivotal role in my approach to veterinary medicine. In Rwanda, as in many places, health issues are intertwined with the environment and human activities. With my expanded understanding of these interconnected factors, I'll be better equipped to diagnose and address health challenges at their roots, promoting more effective and sustainable solutions. Whether it's tackling zoonotic diseases, advocating for sustainable agricultural practices, or contributing to wildlife conservation efforts, I'm excited to apply this holistic perspective to create a lasting impact.

Embarking on a multinational One Health program was a dream come true, little did I know that this journey would be peppered with challenges that would ultimately shape me into a more resilient and determined change-maker. Navigating a multinational program introduced me to the rich tapestry of cultures and ideas. Engaging with peers felt sometimes like deciphering a puzzle, as languages and cultural nuances collided. Rather than succumbing to frustration, I embraced these challenges as opportunities for growth. Through perseverance, I not only overcome the communication hurdles but also honed my collaboration skills, emerging as a more effective and adaptable team player. Indeed, bustling cities in California to remote areas like Clover valley, adapting to unfamiliar surroundings and resources was a recurring test. The lack of familiarity sometimes led to feelings of discomfort and self-doubt. However, embracing the unknown become my mantra. I shifted my focus from discomfort to curiosity, approaching each new environment with an open mind. I can confidently witness that challenges are stepping stones toward meaningful change.

The studying environment at UC Davis was nothing short of amazing. State-of-the-art laboratories, beautiful classrooms, and serene gardens provided the perfect backdrop for an enriching learning experience. Camping and exploring the picturesque Hastings Reserve brought us closer to nature and fostered a deeper appreciation for the interconnectedness of all living beings. I am deeply grateful for the sponsorship that made this journey possible. To the organizations and individuals who believed in me and supported my participation in this course, I promise that your investment will not go in vain. As a veterinarian, I am committed to being part of the One Health Workforce and using the acquired experience to work collaboratively with other experts in tackling global health issues.
