RxOH 2023 Alum: Mary Kearney
My name is Mary Kearney and I’m the Global Operations Manager for the USAID funded One Health Workforce - Next Generation project led by the University of California, Davis One Health Institute. As an alumna of the Rx One Health course, I had the privilege of embarking on an enriching journey that has broadened my horizons and equipped me with the tools to tackle complex health challenges. Join me as I share my perspective on this remarkable course!
A Multidisciplinary Adventure
From the very first day, the Rx One Health course immersed students into a multidisciplinary adventure. I was part of a diverse cohort consisting of individuals from various backgrounds such as veterinary medicine, human medicine, environmental science, public health, and more. This rich blend of expertise created a vibrant learning environment where we could draw from each other's experiences and perspectives, enriching our understanding of One Health principles.
Comprehensive Curriculum
The curriculum of the Rx One Health course is thoughtfully designed to cover a wide range of topics essential for a holistic understanding of One Health. We delved into the intricacies of zoonotic disease transmission, explored the links between wet meadow degradation and groundwater conservation, and examined the socio-economic factors influencing health outcomes. The course offered a balance between theory and practical application, ensuring that we acquired both the knowledge and the skills necessary to make a tangible impact in the field.
Experiential Learning Opportunities
One of the highlights of the Rx One Health course was the plethora of experiential learning opportunities it offered. We had the chance to visit the OHI Lab in Davis, ALBA Farm in Salinas, the Marine Wildlife Veterinary Care and Research Center in Santa Cruz, and Clover Valley Ranch near Plumas, among other sites, allowing us to witness the application of One Health principles in diverse settings. These experiences brought to life the complexities of implementing collaborative approaches and reinforced the importance of bridging the gaps between different sectors to address global health challenges effectively.
Engaging Learning Methods
The learning methods employed during the Rx One Health course were engaging and interactive. We participated in lively discussions, carried out interactive role-play scenarios, and worked on group projects to devise solutions to real-world problems using the One Health approach. The most impactful activity for me was the capstone activity. My group chose to research and provide One Health solutions to the number of social, ecological, and biological issues caused by the construction of the US-Mexico border wall. Our project both inspired and humbled me as I was in awe of the complexity of the issue.
Building a Network
Perhaps the most monumental asset I gained from Rx One Health was the extensive professional network. The course provided me with an invaluable opportunity to connect with lecturers, professionals, experts, and students in the field of One Health. Throughout the course I formed lasting connections that continue to serve as a source of inspiration, collaboration, and support even after the course has ended. In fact, my cohort and the friendships I made were my favorite part of Rx One Health and I am looking forward to staying in touch.
A Transformative Journey
I can confidently say that this program has been a transformative journey. It has broadened my perspective, instilled in me a deep appreciation for the interconnectedness of health systems, and equipped me with the skills to address complex global health challenges through a One Health approach. From its comprehensive curriculum to its engaging learning methods and experiential opportunities, the course provides students with the knowledge, skills, and networks necessary to become One Health leaders. I am grateful for the invaluable experiences and lessons gained through this course, and I am excited to continue my journey of making a positive impact in the world using the One Health approach. Going forward, I will be
working with my capstone group to publish work on the US-Mexico border wall. I now also have a robust network of diverse individuals to tap into whenever I need expertise outside of my realm. Rx One Health has truly been an invaluable experience!
